The Story Behind The Tarot Hearse
In 2019, I was at a witches’ retreat in Salem, fresh out of a two-hour tarot class, when I saw a hearse for sale on Facebook Marketplace. I sent it to a friend as a joke. She looked at it, looked at me, and said, “You should just buy it and read cards out of it in New Orleans.”
I did a quick Google search. Nobody else was doing it, not in New Orleans and not anywhere else.
So I bought her sight unseen and had her delivered. At the time, I had almost no money to spare, so it was either a terrible mistake or the best decision I would ever make.
Turns out, it was the second one.
Today, Persephone is a fully restored 1987 Cadillac hearse with floral ceilings, coloured lighting, and velvet seating. She is now home to one of New Orleans’ most unique tarot reading experiences.
In 2022, The Washington Post featured The Tarot Hearse as one of New Orleans’ most unusual small businesses, and Holli Hay created a three-minute mini-documentary telling the story behind it.
